The Song of Moses and Israel

15 ^(A)Then Moses and the sons of Israel sang this song to the Lord, ^[a]saying:

^19 (AR)For the horses of Pharaoh with his chariots and his horsemen went into the sea, and the Lord brought back the waters of the sea on them, but the sons of Israel walked on ^(AS)dry land through the midst of the sea.

^20 (AT)Miriam the prophetess, Aaron’s sister, took the ^(AU)tambourine in her hand, and all the women went out after her with tambourines and with ^[l](AV)dancing. ²¹ And Miriam answered them,

The Lord Provides Water

^22 (AX)Then Moses ^[n]led Israel from the ^[o]Red Sea, and they went out into ^(AY)the wilderness of ^(AZ)Shur; and they went three days in the wilderness and found no water. ²³ When they came to ^(BA)Marah, they could not drink the waters ^[p]of Marah, because they were ^[q]bitter; for that reason it was named ^[r]Marah. ²⁴ So the people ^(BB)grumbled at Moses, saying, “What are we to drink?” ²⁵ Then he ^(BC)cried out to the Lord, and the Lord showed him ^(BD)a tree; and he threw it into the waters, and the waters became sweet.

There He ^(BE)made for them a statute and regulation, and there He ^(BF)tested them. ²⁶ And He said, “^(BG)If you will listen carefully to the voice of the Lord your God, and do what is right in His sight, and listen ^(BH)to His commandments, and keep all His statutes, ^(BI)I will put none of the diseases on you which I have put on the Egyptians; for I, ^(BJ)the Lord, am your healer.”

²⁴ “Truly, truly, I say to you, the one who hears My word, and ^(A)believes Him who sent Me, has eternal life, and ^(B)does not come into judgment, but has ^(C)passed out of death into life.

Two Resurrections

²⁵ Truly, truly, I say to you, ^[a](D)a time is coming and ^[b]even now has arrived, when ^(E)the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God, and those who ^(F)hear will live. ²⁶ For just as the Father has life in Himself, so He ^(G)gave to the Son also to have life in Himself; ²⁷ and He gave Him authority to ^(H)execute judgment, because He is ^[c]the Son of Man. ²⁸ Do not be amazed at this; for ^[d](I)a time is coming when ^(J)all who are in the tombs will hear His voice, ²⁹ and will come out: ^(K)those who did the good deeds to a resurrection of life, those who committed the bad deeds to a resurrection of judgment.

³⁰ “^(L)I can do nothing ^[e]on My own. As I hear, I judge; and ^(M)My judgment is ^[f]righteous, because I do not seek My own will but ^(N)the will of Him who sent Me.

³¹ “^(O)If I alone testify about Myself, My testimony is not ^[g]true. ³² There is ^(P)another who testifies about Me, and I know that the testimony which He gives about Me is true.

Testimony of John the Baptist

³³ You have sent messengers to John, and he ^(Q)has testified to the truth. ³⁴ But ^(R)the testimony I receive is not from man, but I say these things so that you may be saved. ³⁵ He was ^(S)the lamp that was burning and shining, and you ^(T)were willing to rejoice for ^[h]a while in his light.

Testimony of Works

³⁶ But the testimony I have is greater than the testimony of John; for ^(U)the works which the Father has given Me ^(V)to accomplish—the very works that I do—testify about Me, that the Father ^(W)has sent Me.

Testimony of the Father

³⁷ And the Father who sent Me, ^(X)He has testified about Me. You have neither heard His voice at any time, nor seen His form. ³⁸ Also you do not have ^(Y)His word remaining in you, because you do not believe Him whom He ^(Z)sent.

Testimony of the Scripture

^39 [i](AA)You examine the Scriptures because you think that in them you have eternal life; and it is ^(AB)those very Scriptures that testify about Me; ⁴⁰ and yet you are unwilling to come to Me so that you may have life. ^41 (AC)I do not receive glory from people; ⁴² but I know you, that you do not have the love of God in yourselves. ⁴³ I have come in My Father’s name, and you do not ^[j]receive Me; ^(AD)if another comes in his own name, you will ^[k]receive him. ⁴⁴ How can you believe, when you ^[l](AE)accept ^[m]glory from one another and you do not seek ^(AF)the ^[n]glory that is from ^(AG)the one and only God? ⁴⁵ Do not think that I will accuse you before the Father; the one who accuses you is ^(AH)Moses, in whom you have put your hope. ⁴⁶ For if you believed Moses, you would believe Me; for ^(AI)he wrote about Me. ⁴⁷ But ^(AJ)if you do not believe his writings, how will you believe My words?”

²⁷ Then they came to ^(A)Elim where there were twelve springs of water and seventy date palms, and they camped there beside the waters.

The Lord Provides Manna

16 Then they set out from Elim, and all the congregation of the sons of Israel came to the wilderness of ^(B)Sin, which is between Elim and Sinai, on ^(C)the fifteenth day of the second month after their departure from the land of Egypt. ² But the whole congregation of the sons of Israel ^(D)grumbled against Moses and Aaron in the wilderness. ³ The sons of Israel said to them, “^(E)If only we had died by the Lord’s hand in the land of Egypt, ^(F)when we sat by the pots of meat, when we ate bread until we were full; for you have brought us out into this wilderness to kill this entire assembly with hunger!”

⁴ Then the Lord said to Moses, “Behold, ^(G)I will rain bread from heaven for you; and the people shall go out and gather a day’s portion every day, so that I may ^(H)test them, whether or not they will walk in My ^[a]instruction. ^5 (I)On the sixth day, when they prepare what they bring in, it will be twice as much as they gather daily.” ⁶ So Moses and Aaron said to all the sons of Israel, “At evening ^[b](J)you will know that the Lord has brought you out of the land of Egypt; ⁷ and in the morning ^[c]you will see ^(K)the glory of the Lord, for ^(L)He hears your grumblings against the Lord; and ^(M)what are we, that you grumble against us?”

The Lord Provides Meat

⁸ And Moses said, “This will happen when the Lord gives you meat to eat in the evening, and bread to the full in the morning; for the Lord hears your grumblings which you grumble against Him. And what are we? Your grumblings are ^(N)not against us but against the Lord.”

⁹ Then Moses said to Aaron, “Say to all the congregation of the sons of Israel, ‘^(O)Come forward before the Lord, for He has heard your grumblings.’” ¹⁰ And it came about, as Aaron spoke to the entire congregation of the sons of Israel, that they ^[d]looked toward the wilderness, and behold, ^(P)the glory of the Lord appeared in the cloud. ¹¹ And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, ¹² “^(Q)I have heard the grumblings of the sons of Israel; speak to them, saying, ‘^[e]At twilight you shall eat meat, and in the morning you shall be filled with bread; and ^(R)you shall know that I am the Lord your God.’”

¹³ So it came about at evening that ^(S)the quails came up and covered the camp, and in the morning ^(T)there was a layer of dew around the camp. ^14 (U)When the layer of dew ^[f]evaporated, behold, on the ^[g]surface of the wilderness ^(V)there was a fine flake-like thing, fine as the frost on the ground. ¹⁵ When the sons of Israel saw it, they said to one another, “^[h]What is it?” For they did not know what it was. And Moses said to them, “^(W)It is the bread which the Lord has given you to eat. ¹⁶ This is ^[i]what the Lord has commanded: ‘Everyone gather ^[j]as much as he will eat; you shall take ^[k](X)an omer apiece according to the number of people each of you has in his tent.’” ¹⁷ The sons of Israel did so, and some gathered much and some little. ¹⁸ When they measured it by the ^[l]omer, ^(Y)the one who had gathered much did not have too much, and the one who had gathered little did not have too little; everyone gathered ^[m]as much as he would eat. ¹⁹ Moses said to them, “^(Z)No one is to leave any of it until morning.” ²⁰ But they did not listen to Moses, and some left part of it until morning, and it bred worms and stank; and Moses was angry with them. ²¹ They gathered it morning by morning, everyone ^[n]as much as he would eat; but when the sun became hot, it would melt.

The Sabbath

^22 (AA)Now on the sixth day they gathered twice as much bread, ^[o]two omers for each one. When all the ^(AB)leaders of the congregation came and told Moses, ²³ then he said to them, “This is what the Lord ^[p]meant: ^(AC)Tomorrow is a Sabbath observance, a holy Sabbath to the Lord. Bake what you will bake and boil what you will boil, and ^(AD)all that is left over ^[q]put aside to be kept until morning.” ²⁴ So they put it aside until morning, as Moses had ordered, and ^(AE)it did not stink nor was there a maggot in it. ²⁵ Then Moses said, “Eat it today, for today is a Sabbath to the Lord; today you will not find it in the field. ^26 (AF)Six days you shall gather it, but on the seventh day, the Sabbath, there will be ^[r]none.”

²⁷ Yet it came about on the seventh day that some of the people went out to gather, but they found none. ²⁸ Then the Lord said to Moses, “^(AG)How long do you refuse to keep My commandments and My ^[s]instructions? ²⁹ See, ^[t]the Lord has given you the Sabbath; for that reason He gives you bread for two days on the sixth day. Remain, everyone, in his place; no one is to leave his place on the seventh day.” ³⁰ So the people rested on the seventh day.

³¹ And the house of ^(AH)Israel named the bread ^[u]manna, and it was like ^(AI)coriander seed, white, and its taste was like wafers with honey. ³² Then Moses said, “This is ^[v]what the Lord has commanded: ‘A ^[w]full omer of it is to be kept safe throughout your generations, so that they may see the bread that I fed you in the wilderness, when I brought you out of the land of Egypt.’” ³³ And Moses said to Aaron, “^(AJ)Take a jar and put a ^[x]full omer of manna in it, and place it before the Lord to be kept safe throughout your generations.” ³⁴ As the Lord commanded Moses, so Aaron placed it before ^(AK)the Testimony, to be kept. ³⁵ And ^(AL)the sons of Israel ate the manna for forty years, until they came to an inhabited land; they ate the manna until they came to the border of the land of Canaan.

The Christian’s Walk

^17 (A)So I say this, and affirm in the Lord, ^(B)that you are to no longer walk just as the ^[a]Gentiles also walk, in the ^(C)futility of their minds, ¹⁸ being ^(D)darkened in their understanding, ^[b](E)excluded from the life of God because of the ^(F)ignorance that is in them, because of the ^(G)hardness of their heart; ¹⁹ and they, having ^(H)become callous, ^(I)have given themselves up to ^(J)indecent behavior ^[c]for the practice of every kind of impurity with greediness. ²⁰ But you did not ^(K)learn Christ in this way, ²¹ if indeed you ^(L)have heard Him and have ^(M)been taught in Him, just as truth is in Jesus, ²² that, in reference to your former way of life, you are to ^(N)rid yourselves of the ^(O)old ^[d]self, which is being corrupted in accordance with the ^(P)lusts of deceit, ²³ and that you are to be ^(Q)renewed in the spirit of your minds, ²⁴ and to ^(R)put on the ^(S)new ^[e]self, which ^[f](T)in the likeness of God has been created in righteousness and holiness of the truth.

²⁵ Therefore, ^(U)ridding yourselves of falsehood, ^(V)speak truth each one of you with his neighbor, because we are ^(W)parts of one another. ^26 (X)Be angry, and yet do not sin; do not let the sun go down on your anger, ²⁷ and do not ^(Y)give the devil ^[g]an opportunity. ²⁸ The one who steals must no longer steal; but rather ^(Z)he must labor, ^(AA)producing with his own hands what is good, ^(AB)so that he will have something to share with the one who has need. ²⁹ Let no ^[h](AC)unwholesome word come out of your mouth, but if there is any good word for ^(AD)edification ^[i]according to the need of the moment, say that, so that it will give grace to those who hear. ^30 (AE)Do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, ^[j]by whom you were ^(AF)sealed for the day of redemption.
